I'll sure be on the lookout for it now!Haydenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02758977872663382006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-119099391190506620.post-29344730924699349682009-01-02T10:05:00.000-08:002009-01-02T10:05:00.000-08:00Sounds like an interesting food. We are beginning to grow our own grains, both for the animals as well as for our kitchen.

We started to feed our chickens from the fields of spring wheat and oats when they were at the soft dough stage. They did quite well on this early grain. But I never thought of using it as food in the house at this point!

We also had thought of using a hedge trimmer to harvest a small field of grain, and attaching a bag to it to catch the heads, something like a tall lawn mower. But we found that a scythe works great for harvesting the feed grains, we store them loose in the barn and feed them in shocks. And for our own kitchen grains, we pick the heads by hand in no time.

We have seen the chipper threshing design, looks interesing. For our own kitchen grains we are currently using a hand-crank meat grinder. It threshes out the wheat and hulless oats just fine.

Great to see a blog discussing small scale grain production, looking forward to seeing more in the coming season.Freija and Beringian Fritillaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11591614320106389316noreply@blogger.com
